Essence
Best Dialogue:
Da'an invites Renee to the Mothership.
Renee "Why are we talking about this?"
Da'an "Because of this love you have for your brother, you have acted against your beliefs. This is similar to what I feel about my family and friends who may not survive their energy stasis.
Renee "I hadn't heard about that."
Da'an "Taelon lives are so valuable, so fragile. We are near the end. I have four children aboard the Mothership, barely living in embryonic tubes. I fear I shall never see them again. I shouldn't be telling you this, but I feel I can trust you."
Renee "That is very flattering. To lose your family, unimaginable."
Da'an "Thank you for listening to me." Da'an takes a hold of Renee's hand and presses it. "I feel much better."
Da'an & Zo'or
Da'an "The importation of human emotions is a foolish endeavor, even dangerous."
Zo'or "Foolish? You treat the creatures as equals. Have you never wished to feel as they do?"
Da'an "No, but I have witnessed the damage done by your incessant attempts. Why pursue this Zo'or?"
Zo'or "Because emotion may be their most valuable quality. Tangled somewhere down in their limbic system is one set of emotions,… the passion for life. From this, they derive a fierce survival instinct."
Da'an "I know of it."
Zo'or "Then you also know that it sometimes allows them to survive certain death."
Da'an "Yes, a quality of their species to be most admired."
Zo'or "Especially by another species that is dying with such unemotional certainty. One of us must try and import this passion for life. It could be our salvation."
Da'an "I will not be your experiment, Zo'or. Regardless, the question is mute. Renee Palmer has withdrawn the patented devices to make it possible."
